The 7 Rs of application modernization are the main strategies available for developing an existing application. They help CIOs choose the right roadmap according to the condition of the software, its business value, technical constraints, maintenance costs, and its role in the information system.

The seven approaches are generally the following:

  • Rehost: move the application to a new environment, often in the cloud, without making major changes to its code. This is the fastest approach, but it does not always reduce technical debt.
  • Replatform: make limited changes to the application so that it can use a new technical environment, without rewriting it completely.
  • Refactor: restructure the existing code to improve maintainability, performance, security, or scalability while keeping the main features.
  • Rearchitect: change the application architecture to support new uses, for example through microservices, APIs or better interoperability with the information system.
  • Rebuild: rebuild the application from the beginning when the existing version is too limited, too expensive to maintain or too far from current business needs.
  • Replace: replace the application with standard software when an existing solution can cover the need.

It depends on the condition of your application, its business value, your schedule and your target technology. Refactoring reduces technical debt without breaking everything. Rewriting in modules is often the right choice when technologies are reaching the end of their lifecycle. Moving to the cloud is relevant when current hosting limits the application.

Third-Party Application Maintenance is modular. The standard scope includes corrective maintenance, which covers the resolution of problems, application improvements, and Level 2 and Level 3 technical support.

We can also provide optional hosting and a bilingual French and English Service Desk, available up to 24 hours a day and seven days a week, depending on the selected service level. You remain free to change the scope according to your actual needs.

For modernization projects, we generally work through fixed-price stages or controlled technical support. A fixed price secures the cost and schedule for a clear scope. Controlled technical support is more suitable when the scope changes through short cycles.

For Third-Party Application Maintenance, the commitment is based on documented Service Level Agreements, including response times, resolution times according to priority and availability. You can start with a limited scope and extend it as trust develops.
